The inner-city seats of Sydney and Grayndler have the nation’s largest numbers of same-s-x couples in the country – going off the 2001 census figures and the pre-redistribution electoral boundaries – by miles.

Yet their members, leading Labor lights Tanya Plibersek and Anthony Albanese, have been accused of doing zip for the gay community.

Just before Christmas, Peter Garrett declared he didn’t have a problem with gay marriage.

Around the same time, though, Peter Furness from Australian Marriage Equality lambasted the Labor MPs for their approach to the issue.

“I’m greatly discouraged by the continual stringing along by the opposition of our community and distressed that those who claim to be our friends in the Labor party continue to do absolutely zip for us,” he told SX magazine.

“There’s a real blockage on pressure for the ALP when even their own MPs who represent the gayest electorates in the country, namely Plibersek and Albanese, won’t even say boo within their party, lest it affect their own career progression.”
