Off day. Peter Costello has expressed his sadness that Parliament is not sitting on Fundamental Injustice Day, named after a hyperbolic speech Kevin Rudd gave on the introduction of the GST where he said “When the history of this Parliament, this nation and this century is written, 30 June 1999 will be recorded as a day of fundamental injustice — an injustice which is real, an injustice which is not simply conjured up by the fleeting rhetoric of politicians. It will be recorded as the day when the social compact that has governed this nation for the last 100 years was torn up.” Crikey hears that the Treasurer considered getting Fundamental Injustice Day badges made up until he realised it was a non-sitting day.
Journos brave the badlands. There’s been fun and games in TV land over who does and doesn’t get into Mutitjulu. Nine’s Daniel Street got in first, and kept talking about their exclusive, rather than the issue at stake. Seven then arrived, so Nine had to start talking about how they’d been first in. But there’s general agreement that it’s very good Mutitjulu is a key flashpoint. It must be one of the few utterly dysfunctional Aboriginal communities with a five star resort next door.
House call. Was that well known Labor barrister and disappointed candidate for the state seat of Blue Mountains, accompanied by former federal minister Gary Punch, visiting the bruvvers in Sussex Street on Wednesday?
