After the relative certainty of Geelong’s triumph last weekend, it’s reassuring to know that those of us addicted to the culture of prediction are about to be lurched back into some serious head scratching, thanks to Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival. And what better way to tease a tipster into reckless reckonings than by beginning Turnbull Stakes day with a two year-old race that is distinguished by the fact that none of the contenders have ever raced before?

Of course, there is trial form in the Maribrynong Trial Stakes (for some of them), and on this score it might pay to have a smallish sum on Exceedingly Good. I will be doing this courtesy of Crikey, who have asked me to provide guidance of sorts over the coming weeks for the “Crikey 50” – an investment fund featuring $5 flutters on the nose in each of tomorrow’s ten races.

Predicting the outcome of the Turnbull Stakes could prove one of the tougher calls, but I think Marasco should be able to improve on his third in the Underwood Stakes.

Elsewhere on the Flemington card, Light Vision looks a good thing despite the likely short odds in race four, and Adelaide raider Family Guy could help make up for Port’s poor Grand Final performance in the last race.
