It’s one thing the Women’s Electoral Lobby and the Festival of Light agree on. They both like ranking candidates and parties in election campaigns.

Candidates get bombarded by special interest group questionnaires. Party organisations issue standard responses their people can dutifully follow.

Day three and scorecards are already appearing. The first we’ve seen comes from the Australian Conservation Foundation.

Their effort is online and rates the parties represented in parliament on climate change, water and the environment out of a hundred and gives both the Liberals and Labor a score below 50.

Premature? No, clever. The ACF are a pressure group, and to keep the pressure on they’ll be updating their scorecard “every week during the election campaign to reflect new commitments from the parties”.

“All parties and candidates should be in no doubt climate change will be a huge consideration when Australians vote on 24 November,” executive director Don Henry says.
