Polls have begun to close in Indiana and Kentucky, the New York Times reports.

“In voting booths in every corner of the land, the people were collectively writing the conclusion to a political saga that has been unfolding for nearly two years, during a tumultuous, uncertain period of American history in which three out of four voters told exit pollsters that the country was seriously off on the wrong track.

“By a wide margin, voters said that the economy was the most important issue facing the nation. Preliminary exit-poll results indicated that 6 in 10 voters called the economy the most important issue in the election, followed by 1 in 10 who said that the war in Iraq was the most important; other issues were named less often.”
