In Committee Room 14, British Prime Minister Brown fought for his political survival against rebellious MPs — and won.

Mr Brown knew that he had no hope of survival unless he gave his MPs some hope that he could steer them from electoral disaster. “We will solve the problem not by walking away but by facing it and solving it,” he said as he began to spell out how Labour might yet avoid a crushing defeat at the next election. He said the party would win if it did four things: got the economy in the right place, got the political system right, talked about the future and displayed unity.
