Louis Nowra’s wife, Mandy Sayer, answers her husband’s critics in today’s Australian, in an item running under the awful headline “Louis, Louis, oh baby, you gotta go.” According to Sayer, “several feminists have attacked my husband, Louis Nowra, in the press, accusing him of being misogynist bastard.”
In an attempt, we presume, to defend her husband’s good name, Sayer decided to go sarcastic on this one. The tongue seems to be somewhere near her cheek when she writes, “And after reading all the press, I have to agree; the man is a woman-hating jerk”:
“… he never lets me into my own kitchen; he does all the daily grocery shopping and insists on cooking every night. And that really pisses me off. On top of that, when I’m not looking, he’ll disappear for 10 minutes and do the washing up.
“… I’ll tell you what — it’s bloody awful. Now I don’t just have a room of my own, I have a two-bedroom apartment of my own stocked with some fresh groceries that I don’t remember buying.”
Sayer then follows up that nuanced answer to Nowra’s critics with this upper cut: apparently her aunties, and her mum, really, really like him:
“… when my 70-year-old mother first met him at my father’s funeral, she was so offended by him that, when they found themselves alone in a lift, she told him to forget about me as a girlfriend and tried to persuade him to run off with her.”
Opportunistic mother aside, Sayer delivers the knockout blow with the revelation that Nowra has “anonymously paid the educational expenses of disadvantaged Aboriginal girls in our local community, which [sarcastic bit to follow] irritates me no end:
With that money we could have bought things we really need, like a dishwasher or a car.
And with that, Nowra’s critics are now surely silenced.
This complex argument was best boiled down by @benpobjie on Twitter this morning:
A syllogism: Louis Nowra does the washing up; therefore, Germaine Greer is a crazy old bag of crap.
