Yesterday, Mike Rann described his government’s likely narrow election win as “the sweetest victory of all”.
With that comment, the South Australian Premier demonstrated, with insulting precision, the skills he has employed to morph from one of Australia’s most popular and trusted leaders to one of its smarmiest. And all in just a matter of months.
This is Rann’s definition of a sweet victory: last election the ALP boasted four marginals and 24 safe seats.
They now have 11 marginals and 14 safe seats.
There’s only one thing Mike Rann can do to restore a sense of decency and believability in South Australian politics. He should go. Now.
Well we all know he’s smarmy. He’s been like that for longer than the last few months.
And “the sweetest victory of all” is a reference to the 1993 federal election where Labor only just scrapped through. Although I would have saved it for the victory speech, just in case.
He mentioned in the same sentence: ”…after they threw everything at us”.
(WE on the other hand did not distort posters or masquerade as Family First at some polling booths).
Any humility that this man can possibly dredge up, is ALWAYS tempered by the reality of such comments.
This is what he is;-this sarcastic arrogance will show itself again and again.
( If I had thrown everything at him, he would be covered in plaster of paris by now..)
Its easy to sneer from the great height of east coast journalistic
towers. Rann has, on balance run a reasonably competent honest
government in a state with few natural advantages.
How would any of us react with every ars-hole and his droving dog
commenting with virulent ignorance on every topic of the day. Try living
in public with every journo always looking for a bleeding injury to crow over.
Most comments like this, and the rest, do not contribute to better governance.
He is an arrogant pain and the libs managed to implode on the line and among all that we had around 50,000 people who really don’t car what anyone does to our state. Pretty disappointing I think.
The fact that Rann declared himself as haing won even though this is not 100% finalised is a mark of the arrogance that lead me to vote liberal for the first time ever. A focus on development rather and at times in spite of community concern and consultation (or representation???!)combined with sidelining of “nice” ministers (clearly gentler presentations and gender have not been looked upon favorably by the high profile power players in) are also reasons why I felt driven to this choice.
Sad but true
