The Winners: A night that didn’t live up to the promise. The sport didn’t work for Nine. Ten and Seven did better. The Sri Lankans do not pull viewers. 60 Minutes would have done better in ratings terms. Seven’s 6pm News topped the night, which again underlines the lack of a killer program later in the evening, anywhere.

  1. Seven News (6pm)– 1.399 million
  2. Junior MasterChef (Ten) (7.30pm) — 1.358 million
  3. Bones (Seven) (8.30pm) — 1.283 million
  4. Nine News (6pm) — 1.224 million

  6. The X Factor (Seven) (7.30pm) — 1.089 million
  7. Modern Family (Ten) (7pm) — 1.061 million

The Losers: Nine’s cricket and Rugby League telecasts, beaten from 6.30pm to 9.30pm by Seven and Ten.

News & CA: Nine News won Sydney, Seven won the rest. That was the night. Sunday Night won by default.

The Stats:

  • FTA: Nine won with a share of 29.9% from Seven on 29.6%, Ten on 20.0%, the ABC, 15.5% and SBS on 5.0%.
  • Main Channel: Seven won here with a share of 25.1% from Nine with 23.6%, Ten on 19.2%, ABC 1 on 13.8% and SBS ONE with 3.7%.
  • Digital: Nine’s Gem, the supposedly over 30 female-skewing digital channel had a very weak night last night with an FTA share of 0.2%, Ten’s ONE had an FTA share of 0.9%. Of the two channels that Seven and Nine started in late September, 7Mate has been the far more successful and is now running second or third nationally most night. GO won last night with a share of 6.1%, from 7Mate on 2.4%, 7TWO with 2.1%, SBS TWO with 1.2%, ABC 2 on 1.0%, ONE on 0.9%, News 24 with 0.5% and Gem and ABC 3 with 0.2% each. That’s a total FTA share for the digitals of 14.5%. The digital FTA shares ranged from a low of 11.5% in Sydney to 16.9% in Adelaide.
  • Pay TV: Nine won with 24.9% for its three channels, from Seven with 24.7% for its trio. Ten’s duo were next with a combined 16.7%, Pay TV and its 100-plus channels had a total 14.1%, the ABC’s four channels added up to 12.9% and SBS’s two channels totalled 4.1%. That left 85.9% for the FTA Networks, made up of 12.1% for the digital channels and 73.8% for the five main channels. The Pay TV shares ranged from the usual high of 15.(% in Sydney, to a low of 9.2% in Adelaide.
  • Regional: the Rugby League and the cricket did it for Nine and its affiliate WIN in regional areas. WIN/NBN won with a share of 34.7%, from Prime/7Qld with 30.6%, SC Ten on 16.3%, the ABC with 13.6% and SBS was on 4.8%. WIN/NBN won the main channels with 28.8% from Prime/7Qld on 25.2%, because the Rugby League Test against England and the twenty20 game against Sri Lanka did better in the regions than in the big metro markets. GO won the digitals with 6.1% from 7TWO on 2.8% and 7Mate on 2.7%. (Nine’s Gem rated 0.2%). The nine FTA channels totalled 15.5%.

Major Markets: The Rugby League and twenty20 cricket did it for Nine in Sydney and Brisbane, elsewhere no one cared much, especially about the football. Nine won Sydney and Brisbane both overall and in the main channels from, Seven and Ten. Seven won Melbourne overall and in the main channels where Ten beat Nine into second. Seven won Adelaide and Perth overall and in the main channels. GO won the digitals in every metro market from 7TWO and 7Mate, but ONE slipped into third in Perth.

(All shares on the basis of combined overnight 6pm to midnight All People)

Glenn Dyer’s comments: Seven won last week overall and in the main channels with Nine second and Ten third. Seven won Friday night, Nine won Sydney. Ten was 4th on both nights. GO won the digitals from 7TWO and 7Mate. On Saturday night Foxtel and its 100 channels won Sydney (and was second on Friday night).

Nine was both a winner and a loser because the Rugby League game and the twenty20 cricket didn’t get the network home last night. Nine’s GO digital channel boosted its share on the night, but the main channel was beaten by Seven. A majority of viewers voted for something other than sport.

Despite finishing a distant third in All People, Ten won all key demographics: 18-49, 16-39 and 25-54 thanks to the combination of Modern Family, Junior MasterChef and Offspring.

TONIGHT: The ABC’s wall to wall news and current affairs from 7pm. Nine has The Mentalist at 8.30pm. Seven has Criminal Minds. Ten has Good News Week after Undercover Boss Australia.
