Last weekend it was a special treat to be invited as the guest reviewer for an excellent monthly film podcast called Hell is For Hyphenates, which is “designed for cinema addicts who have absolutely no plans to kick the habit.”
The podcast is hosted by Lee Zachariah of The Bazura Project (check it out, it’s fabulous) and Ain’t it Cool News fame and Paul Anthony Nelson, a filmmaker and commentator who has – as aptly described on this site – “what can only be described as a frighteningly encyclopaedic knowledge and deep passion for movies.”
We discussed many of the films released in November including The American, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Gasland, The Loved Ones, Monsters, Red Hill and more. Every guest chooses an auteur to talk about, and, in the lead-up to his next movie Unstoppable, which arrives in cinemas in January, I chose veteran action director Tony Scott (pictured above, cigar in hand).

If you forget which voice I am, I’m the slightly nasally sounding guy who didn’t like Harry Potter or Monsters, didn’t think an awful lot of The Loved Ones and leaped to the defence of Beverley Hills Cop 2.
Our conversation about Tony Scott – the man who brought us Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, True Romance, Enemy of the State, Domino and many others – proved decisive, as it damn well should. Tune in. Well worth a listen.
