The Losers
People who don’t like Sydney after watching episode two of the Oprah visit. Sydney Harbour and the Bridge were pretty special.

Seven News got an old fashioned beating from Nine News last night, losing Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and only winning Adelaide and Perth by enough to give it a national win. But that didn’t help A Current Affair which lost every market to Today Tonight to finish with less than a million viewers for another night. In the morning, Sunrise again won all five markets to easily beat Today.
The Stats
- FTA: Seven (3 channels) won with 28.3% from Ten (3) on 28.1%, Nine (3), on 25.6%, ABC (4)(, 13.3% and SBS (2), 4.7%. Seven leads the week on 30.7% from Nine on 29.9% and Ten with 20.9%.
- Main Channel: Ten won with 22.8% from Seven on 22.4%, Nine with 17.4%, ABC1 on 10.5% and SBS ONE with 4.2%. Seven and Nine are tied for the week with 22.4% each, with Ten back on 15.9%.
- Digital: The 10 digital channels had an FTA share of 22.8% in prime last night. GO won with 4.8%, from Eleven on 4.1%, Gem on 3.4%, 7Mate on 3.3%, 7TWO on 2.7%, ABC2 on 1.6%, One on 1.2%, News 24 and ABC3 with 0.6% each and SBS TWO was on 0.5%. 7TWO leads the week on 4.5%, from Eleven on 4.2% and GO on 4.1%. The FTA shares around the country ranged from a low of 18.7% in Sydney to a high of 27.8% in Perth and over 20% in the other markets.
- Pay TV: Seven (3 channels) won with a share of 22.6%, from Ten on 22.4 for its three channels, Nine (3) was on 20.5%, Pay TV (100 plus channels) was on 17.1%, the ABC (4) was on 10.6% and SBS (2) finished with 3.8%. The 15 FTA channels had a share of 82.9%, made up of 18.3% for the 10 digital channels and 64.6% for the five main channels. Foxtel’s shares ranged from a high of 22.3% in Sydney where it was second, to a low of 12.7% in Adelaide. Perth was again strong with a share of 18.5%. When Pay TV is taken into account, the 10 FTA digital channels had a total share of 24.1% in Perth, meaning that over 42% of the Perth market were not watching the five main channels last night.
Major Markets: Ten won Sydney overall and in the main channels, as viewers responded to Oprah. Surprisingly, Ten also won Perth overall and in the main channels on the other side of the continent. Seven won the markets in between, thanks to the tennis. GO won the digitals everywhere, bar Perth where Eleven got up. Since Eleven started last week the damage to GO and 7TWO’s figures has been quite noticeable. Nine leads the week in Sydney and Brisbane and Seven leads in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The cricket one day international from Hobart will change that tonight.
(All shares on the basis of combined overnight 6pm to midnight All People)
Glenn Dyer’s comments: Oprah vs. the tennis. End of story.
TONIGHT: Tennis vs. Oprah with a one day cricket international overlay from Hobart on Nine.
Saturday: Tennis vs. the repeat of Midsomer Murders on the ABC. Nothing else is on.
Sunday: Tennis on Seven vs. an one day international from the SCG and Oprah on Ten. The ABC has the good movie Bran Nue Dae at 8.30pm. It will be much better than Australia on Ten after Oprah.
