The Winners: A very dull night. Seven wins.

  1. Seven News (6pm) — 1.132 million
  2. Today Tonight (Seven) (6.30pm) — 1.102 million
  3. Nine News (6pm) — 1.025 million
  4. The Biggest Loser (Ten) (7.30pm) — 1.019 million

The Losers: For all Seven’s success last night, it was a pretty average night. Apart from the rebirth of ONE sports channel and a solid night for Eleven, Ten was very weak on the main channel, with the one exception — the nightly episode of The Biggest Loser.

News & CA: Seven news won everywhere bar Melbourne, TT lost Brisbane, won the rest on a night. 6PM With George Negus slipped to 309,000 (but that’s still a third of ACA’s audience at a fraction of the cost. The 6pm News averaged 180,000, down around 100,000 on Wednesday. ACA was also down, as was TT. Ten’s loss was greater proportionately. In the morning Today is back at Sunrise‘s heels.

Glenn Dyer’s comments: Seven’s night, especially in the demos. Nine and Ten couldn’t get a look in.

The slow rebirth of Ten’s ONE sports channel continues with another 1% plus audience share last night. Last night it was sport of varying kinds, mostly basketball that did the trick.

ONE is a popular tip for change with the new regime at Ten. But since 2011 ratings started just over three weeks ago, ONE has lifted its audience to around 36,000 in prime time (6pm to midnight) a night from 31,100. That’s actually a 20% increase (I know small numbers), and Ten has done that by adding male attracting movies on some nights instead of rodeos and other very marginal viewing.

The AFL NAB Cup has helped, as it will always do at this time of the year. The experts in the newspapers advocating the gutting of Ten’s sports coverage on ONE (and audiences will jump when the AFL starts later this month), have ignored this improvement.

TONIGHT: Not much at all, again. Better Homes and Gardens. New Tricks (a new episode) tonight. The 7pm Project and The Biggest Loser on Ten. AFL NAB Cup semi final on ONE in Sydney and Brisbane and Ten in AFL states. The colour for the night? Beige…

Saturday: The Australia-Sri Lanka World Cup clash on Nine at 8pm, not 11.30pm. A repeat of Midsomer Murders and the Inspector Morse repeat on the ABC. The colour code for the night, a very dark grey. Watching the test pattern or the SBS world weather would be more entertaining, except for the cricket.

Sunday: The morning chats will generate more carbon than sense. Ignore. 60 Minutes on Nine, The Mentalist at 8.30pm and a new series called Harry’s Law at 9.30pm. Sunday Night on Seven. The Biggest Loser, Modern Family and Bondi Rescue on Ten. The ABC has another Ms Marple. The colour code for the night? A light green, slightly north of teal.
