The Glenn Dyer breakdown: A good win for Australia in a thrilling one-day international final. The Sri Lankans were described as “gallant” in some newspapers today, the usual Aussie sportswriter put-down for a losing team from a smaller cricketing power. The same writers failed to describe the Australians as “lucky”, although they played better than Tuesday night. The Sri Lankans were outstanding, and unlucky. Last night’s game reminded us that ODI cricket is attractive, especially when it’s low scoring and tight!

The session of the cricket averaged 1.034 million for Nine from 6.30pm to well after 10pm. But it ran a distant second to My Kitchen Rules on Seven at 7.30pm with 1.799 million (it’s audience wasn’t touched by the cricket). Today Tonight beat the ODI at 6.30pm as those ACA fans who didn’t like cricket went to Seven for their daily hit of “current affairs” (as they did on Tuesday).

The main channel ratings shares last night were tied at 24.3% for Seven and Nine. The cricket helped the NRL Footy Show on Nine (after the ODI finished), which was watched by 420,000 people in Sydney and Brisbane, up on last week.

But looking at the metro markets, the absence of a live broadcast in Adelaide after 4pm hurt, as it has hurt in past games, while the time differences generated by daylight saving in Brisbane and Perth also saw Seven win and beat the ODI. That left Sydney and Melbourne where the cricket really did well.

Will Nine and Cricket Australia risk another series that ends so late in the year? Nope. The audiences for the four Indian Tests were the real bonus for Nine and ACA, especially final session of each day of play when audiences topped the million viewer mark nearly every time. They were in the height of summer. From February when the ratings battle starts, the rival channels have big programs such as My Kitchen Rules and Packed To the Rafters that viewers want to watch, not one-day cricket, which has lost a lot of its attractions for many fans, especially when there’s also football to watch.

In the morning: Seven’s cash giveaway is getting more bang for the bucks than Nine’s spending is for Today, which seems to have fallen off the pace in the past week.
