ABC local radio had contrasting fortunes in the third radio ratings survey of the year, lifting strongly in Sydney, but losing ground badly in Melbourne.

In Sydney, 702 rose 0.7 to reach an 11.1 share, second behind 2GB, which had a solid survey as well, up 0.7 to 14.9. 702 saw gains in Breakfast (Adam Spencer), up 1 point to 13.6, second behind Alan Jones who also added one point to 17.1. In mornings, newcomer Linda Mottram rose 0.2 to 9.1, second behind 2GB’s Ray Hadley, who shed 0.4 to 16.9. In Afternoons, James Valentine added 0.7 to 8.2, third behind 2GB (down 0.3 to 12.3) and 2Day, which added 1.4 to 9.4. In drive, 702’s Richard Glover won the slot, beating other talk and all the music stations. He rose 1.7 to a share of 13.2. 2GB drive was also up 1.7 to 10.2 and third with 2Day second on 11.1 (up 0.3). 702’s Evenings with Dom Knight was the only loser, off 1.1 at 10.3, but still second behind 2GB.

Elsewhere in Sydney, 2Day’s Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O added 0.1 to a 9.8 share in Breakfast, third in the timeslot (but dominating the younger, under-40 demo. Overall, 2Day was third in Sydney with 9.5 (up 0.6) behind 2GB and 702. The ABC’s youth station, 2JJJ shed 2.1 points to 5.0 in the latest survey, the biggest fall for any of the stations.

In Melbourne it was a poor result for the ABC’s 774. It lost 1.7 to 9.7 to fall to third place overall, after being second in survey two with 11.4. 3AW remains on top, lifting its share to 15.2, up 0.4. 774 Breakfast with Red Symons lost 1.4 to 11.4, to remain just ahead of Fox FM on 11.2 (up 0.5) in third, but well behind 3AW on 17.3 (down 0.3). Jon Faine in mornings on 774 saw a nasty 2.8-point drop to 10.2 from 13.0. He’s still second in the slot behind 3AW’s Neil Mitchell, who lifted his share 2.2 points to 18.4. 774’s Afternoons with Richard Stubbs fell 1.8 to a 7.6 share. That was also a fall from third in the slot to fifth. In Drive, Rafael Epstein was also down, losing 1.5 to 8.6. That was also a fall from third in the slot to fifth. In evenings, Lindy Burns was another loser, down 0.3 to 11.1, but still second in the slot.

The ABC’s Brisbane local radio station, 612 lost ground as well, down 0.9 to an 11.0 share. That was a fall from second to third. Nova 106.9 was the big gainer, adding 2.4 in the survey to 13.0 and second behind 97.3FM on 13.5 (down from 14.4 in the second survey). Better news in Adelaide though for the ABC with 891 adding 1.2 to 12.1 and second in the market behind 5AA on 13.5 (up 0.1). overall.

In Perth, ABC 720 lost 0.1 to 11.1 in the third survey. That put it fifth in the market with MIX 94.5 and 94FM on top with a 12.4 share each. Nova also had a solid survey, jumping 2.6 to 11.6 and moving past 720.
