The Glenn Dyer breakdown: A close yet fairly average night. Nothing stood out.
MasterChef did sort of OK for Ten, averaging 1.150 million from 7.30pm, but when that finished around 8.30pm, only 589,000 stayed to watch Touch.
Given its strength from 6pm until 8.30pm, it was really Nine’s night, even if the figures tell us something different. Interestingly, Ten didn’t do well in the main channels in Perth or Adelaide as the support programs for MasterChef flopped. And Ten also didn’t make an impact in regional areas where it was beaten into third.
Nine won last week nationally, but not the regions where Seven through Prime and 7Qld won, despite the NRL on Nine on Friday night. GO won the digitals for Nine. The metro margin though was the narrowest since The Voice started on Nine. Ten did well with MasterChef‘s return and its share picked up (and, it didn’t get beaten in the main channels by ABC 1).
Tonight: The ABC’s news and current affairs hours from 7pm. Try Four Corners at 8.30pm or Q&A at 9.35pm.
Nine has The Block and The Voice, plus the debut of the much hyped local drama, Tricky Business, which starts at 9.30pm, straight after The Voice, so it will get a good launch.
There’s an AFL game in Melbourne on Seven in the southern states and not much else in Brisbane and Sydney.
Ten has MasterChef — with the cast now complete, let the cooking begin.
Nine will win big because of The Voice and the fact there is no real opposition in Sydney and Brisbane markets (and in the regions as well) on Seven. MasterChef on Ten tonight is the only rival in both markets.

Major Metro Markets: A very mixed night. Nine won Sydney overall and the main channels. Seven won Melbourne and Brisbane overall, but Nine won the main channels. In Adelaide and Perth, Seven won overall and the main channels by margins big enough to push it in front nationally. In Adelaide, Ten was pushed out of third in the main channels by ABC 1. Ten was helped in Perth by the Grand Prix being on ONE (it was on the main channel in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and averaged 330,000 people) and Adelaide. It was why Ten finished second overall in Adelaide and Perth, but fell to third in both markets in the main channels.
