The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Seven won the night. Downton Abbey returned in full regalia on Seven and while it didn’t top the night, the 90 minutes it was on air from around 8.40pm saw it average well over 1.5 million viewers, which helped Seven to a solid win in all people.

But The Block (1.678 million) and MasterChef (1.330 million) also did well for Nine and Ten and scooped up dominant positions in the major demographics. Dancing with the Stars was solid for Seven from 6.30pm with more than 1.23 million viewers in metro markets.

The second part of the The Diamond Queen documentary averaged 968,000 for ABC 1 at 7.30pm.

Last week: Seven won overall and the main channels in the metro markets and won all people. But Nine and Ten were better in the demos, thanks to The Voice, MasterChef, Brothers in Arms and The Block. Seven won Adelaide and Perth by very large margins, Nine won Sydney and Brisbane. In Melbourne, the two AFL games on Friday and Saturday nights pushed Seven into the lead, especially Friday night’s Geelong v Collinwood game. It is the first week Seven has won since Nine started The Voice back in early April.

In regional areas, it was the second weekly win in a row for Seven through Prime/7Qld. However The Voice tonight and then the Rugby league State of Origin on Wednesday night will see Nine win. Seven has shifted Australia’s Got Talent to Thursday night from Wednesday to avoid being swamped by the Origin game.

Tonight: The ABC’s hours of news and current affairs from 7pm. Nine has The Block and The Voice, and then Tricky Business. Ten has not much at all after MasterChef. Seven has Revenge and Body of Proof.
