The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Seven won the night overall, Nine and Ten cleaned up the demos. Big wins in Adelaide and Perth and a smaller one in Melbourne got Seven home. The Block and Nine News were very solid in Melbourne.
Nationally some impressive figures last night: 2.56 million for The Block, 2.154 million for 60 Minutes, 2.136 million for Downton Abbey, plus 2.33 and 2.24 million for Nine and Seven News respectively. The 2.136 million viewers for Downton Abbey from around 8.40 until 10 o’clock or so is why Seven won the night.
On pay TV, the NRL game between Melbourne and Auckland was the most-watched program yesterday with a solid 261,000 viewers. It easy beat the Brisbane-West Coast AFL game with 218,000 viewers.
In metro markets, Dancing with the Stars averaged 1.527 million in 2011. Last night it averaged 1.176 million in the five metro markets. MasterChef did better for Ten with 1.330 million metro viewers, down 300,000 on the 1.641 million average for 2011, not that far from last year’s average of above 1.4 million. Downton Abbey averaged 1.497 million, compared with the 1.906 million for the first series last year. The Block averaged 1.806 million, higher than the 1.34 million average for the Monday to Friday program last year.
Meanwhile, 220,000 watched the diamond jubilee on ABC1 from 10.55 and 101,000 watched on News 24 from 10.30.
Last week: Seven won overall and the main channels in the metro markets with Ten third, then the ABC and SBS GO and 7TWO shared the win in the digital channels. Nine won Sydney and Brisbane (The NRL helped on Friday night). Seven won Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, with the AFL helping the win on Friday and Saturday nights in Melbourne in particular. Nine and Ten won the demos, but the result shows that Nine can no longer depend on The Voice and The Block to win the overall battle: All People might not be as important as it was, but it does come with bragging rights. Ten’s Breakfast averaged 44,000 nationally (including regional markets) Monday to Friday last week. The ABC’s News Breakfast averaged 75,000 on ABC 1 and 48,000 on News 24. Ten’s Breakfast was beaten by a simulcast!
Friday: Seven won from Nine and Ten, then the ABC and SBS as the AFL proved more popular than the NRL. Seven won the main channels from Nine.
Saturday: Seven won easily thanks to the AFL. The ABC was second, Nine third, Ten fourth and then SBS. Seven won the main channels from ABC1.
Tonight: The ABC’s 4½ hours of news and current affairs. Try Australian Story at 8 o’clock for an interesting story on actor Kate Mulvany. Seven has Revenge. Nine has The Voice. Ten has MasterChef Australia.
