The Glenn Dyer breakdown: The Voice, helped by The Block, gave Nine the night, overall, in the main channels and the demos in metro and regional areas.

Q&A with Julia Gillard won the 9.30pm to 10.30pm slot with a total of 1.183 million viewers across the country including the metro and regional main channel audience (1.051 Million) and a further 132,000 viewers on News 24 as well in regional and metro markets.

Sunday Night: Seven won nationally and the main channels. Seven and Nine shared Sydney, Seven won Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. 7mate won the digitals. Prime/7Qld won the regionals. The Block was number one on the night, but Dancing with the Stars and Downton Abbey meant Seven was watched by more than 1.2 million viewers from 6.30pm to around 10pm. But Nine and Ten scooped up the big demos.

Last week: Seven won All People shares narrowly (by 0.1%), but Nine won the main channels, and with Ten, cleaned up the demos. Seven won Friday and Saturday nights.

And here’s something that will worry Foxtel and Fox Sports management as they continue to wonder about the huge AFL bills and slow subscription take up.

Last week the highest audiences on pay TV were for Rugby League and Rugby Union games. The NRL attracted the highest audience on Fox Sports 2 with Parramatta v Cronulla (338,000) followed by Auckland v. Melbourne  (261,000). Fox Sports 3 attracted an audience of 258,000 for the rugby union Test Match between Australia and Wales on Saturday night and last Tuesday night’s rugby union Test  between Australia and Scotland had 256,000 viewers.

Admittedly, the latter were Tests involving Australia, but rugby union has a much smaller fan base than AFL. AFL games had more viewers overall because more AFL games are broadcast (eight v five for NRL). But with bigger fan bases in regional NSW and Queensland (as we will see with the second the second Origin game tomorrow night), rugby league’s importance to Pay TV is being underlined each week by the strong audience figures for the main games.

Tonight: Packed to the Rafters on Seven. The Block on Nine, Dateline and Insight on SBS. MasterChef on Ten and then Being Lara Bingle at 8pm — you have been warned. One sleep to Origin tomorrow night (Game 2 from Sydney).
