The Glenn Dyer breakdown: While it was Nine’s night, thanks to the NRL State of Origin win by NSW in Game 2 from Sydney last night. In fact, the audience numbers nationally, in Queensland and regional areas were below the record levels for Game 1 on May 23.
We saw a bit of audience fatigue in Brisbane, of all places, where the audience fell 14.7% to 774,000 from the record 908,000 for Game 1 on May 23. That was a surprise, given Queensland had the chance last night to wrap up the series. No staying power up north. Will they return for the decider on July 4?
The Sydney audience was higher from Game 1 — 1.185 million compared with 1.153 million — as was the Melbourne audience (366,000 v 317,000). The Adelaide audience rose to 68,000 from 57,000 and the Perth audience hardly budged, 79,000 v 80,000. All up the five metro markets total of 2.472 million, while a fabulous figure, was down from the five metro record 2.515 million for Game 1. It was also under the 2.492 million recorded for Game 3 of the 2011 series which was the previous five metro market record.
In regional areas the audience was 1.371 million, still very high, but down on the 1.442 million all time high for Game 1. There were 497,000 viewers in regional Queensland (533,000 for Game 1), 408,000 in Northern NSW (411,000), 345,000 in southern NSW (360,000), 82,000 in regional Victoria (101,000) and 39,000 in Tasmania (40,000).
All up, the national audience for the game last night was 3.843 million against the 3.960 million for the first game (which was lifted to just under 4 million with the seven day recording in metro and regional areas). And the result? Go the mighty Blues!
Seal, one of the judges from The Voice, sang in the Origin pre-match entertainment. On his effort last night he wouldn’t have gained a start in the program he co-judges.
