The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Nine won thanks to Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year and the strength of the AFL Footy Show in Melbourne, helped, of course, by The Block.

Ten’s Thursday night football shows, Before the Game, moved to the main channel from ONE last night and averaged a reasonable 499,000 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm (and 618,000 nationally). Nine’s AFL and NRL Footy Shows an hour later averaged 737,000 (and 1.073 million nationally), with 326,000 for the AFL show in Melbourne. Ten’s AFL show averaged 228,000. Nine’s NRL program averaged 156,000 in Sydney and 89,000 in Brisbane. Ten’s show averaged 117,000 in Sydney and 57,000 in Brisbane. A total of more than 1.7 million people watched more than two and a half hours of football coverage last night on Ten and Nine.

Tonight: AFL on Seven and Pay TV. NRL on Nine (then main and digital channels of both Nine and Seven). Seven starts a new UK cop series called Vera in the northern markets after Better Homes and Gardens. Nine has The Block at 7pm. Ten has a Master Chef master class and The Living Room. ABC 1 has Silent Witness after Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell which would help lighten up the ABC’s Monday night news and current affairs line up.

Saturday: AFL on Seven and Pay TV. Black Caviar on Seven in the wee small hours of Sunday (around 12.45am). Seven has movies on its main channel in non-AFL states. The Graham Norton Show on Ten. Movies on Nine. the ABC has Death in Paradise on 1 at 7.30pm.

Sunday: The morning chats. AFL on Seven and Pay TV. NRL on Nine and Pay TV. Landline at Midday for an interesting story on kelpie dogs! At night, Seven returns Sunday Night and starts the much hyped Billy Connolly series, Route 66, and then goes to a big episode of Downton Abbey at 8.30pm. Nine has The Block, plus 60 Minutes. Ten has MasterChef. And at 7.30pm on ABC 1, that well known Anzac legend, John Clarke, starts a news three part series called Sporting Nation. The premise of this series, that Australians are sports mad, will be underlined by the thousands of people who watched Black Caviar run in the UK just after midnight today. Tape either or both.
