The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Another night where Seven underperformed, but thanks to the Wimbledon on 7TWO, Seven won overall. In the main channels it was Nine who won with The Block delivering and the penultimate episode of Australia’s Got Talent flopping — just 901,000 metro viewers and nationally. Nine News and A Current Affair again gave Seven News and Today Tonight a towelling from 6pm to 7pm in Sydney and Melbourne. It was a similar story in regional markets as well.
Australia’s Got Talent really flopped last night for Seven considering the program that followed it at 9pm, Mrs Brown’s Boys was new and more viewers watched. Next week, the grand final of Australia’s Got Talent and Mrs Brown’s Boys are up against the third NRL State of Origin game on Nine. Good luck!
A tip: SBS to start using its third digital channel by the end of the year to broadcast a national indigenous TV service after the Stephens Report’s recommendations a couple of years ago and the budget decision to give SBS more money for the service. This will raise the question about all the space on SBS TWO and what the network will use to fill it. At the moment it is not writing much revenue against foreign language news broadcasts and has in fact killed off its Australian mandarin service because of a lack of revenue and a need to cut costs.
Tonight: Well, Silk is the stand out simply because it is well made and moderately well acted. That’s on ABC 1 at 8.30pm. Nine has The Block, Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year and then the two Footy Shows from 9.30pm. Ten has the two Game Plans from 8.30pm. Seven has the split line up between AFL and NRL markets and then Australian-less Wimbledon. SBS has the usual run of foodie programs. Ten has MasterChef.
