The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Seven won overall, but Nine won the main channels and did well in the demos thanks to Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year, while MasterChef was again the success for Ten and topped the night in metro markets with almost 1.3 million viewers, but it slipped to third nationally with 1.733 million.

Nine’s Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year, like the euro currency, slipped last night. It averaged 1.183 million metro viewers and 1.654 million nationally. A week ago, with The Block as the lead in, it averaged 1.411 million metro viewers and 2.013 million national viewers. So the 300,000 plus fall in the national audience was a big ouch! Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year are not as well liked in regional areas as they in metro markets, just as MasterChef is on the nose a bit with regional viewers. Their lack of enthusiasm for the program saw it fail to keep its top spot nationally last night.

Tonight: NRL on Nine, AFL on Seven (main channel and 7mate in different markets) and Pay TV . Wimbledon tennis on Seven after the AFL and on 7TWO. The men’s semi-finals, possibly the best match of the tournament in Federer v Djokovic. The ABC has Silent Witness (it’s another annoying two-parter) on ABC 1. The Tour de France is on SBS1 from 10pm. By the way, in northern markets, Seven has Better Homes and Gardens and then Mrs Brown’s Boys, which means Seven is burning up episodes to prop up a split schedule while the AFL is in other markets. Ten has MasterChef from 7pm.

Saturday: AFL on Seven in the late afternoon and evening on the main channel and 7mate. Also on Pay TV, which also has NRL as well. The ABC has Death in Paradise on ABC 1. The Tour de France is on SBS One at 10pm. There’s tennis on Seven and 7TWO (Women’s Final) and there’s a One Day International cricket game on Gem. It could really be on Nine’s main channel given the boring repeats and movies programmed.

Sunday: The morning chats. AFL on Seven (main channel and 7mate) and Pay TV. NRL on Nine and Pay TV. Domestic Blitz returns to Nine at 6.30pm, then 60 Minutes. Seven has Sunday Night. Billy Connolly’s Route 66 and then Downton Abbey. Ten has MasterChef and SBS has the Tour de France from 10pm. The ABC has the final episode of Sporting Nation and then Wallander.
