The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Seven’s night, although Nine won Sydney easily, thanks to Domestic Blitz and Nine News which averaged just over 600,000 viewers for 90 minutes from 7.30pm, enough to win the night.
Seven had solid wins in Melbourne and Brisbane and huge margins again in Adelaide and Perth thanks to strong returns from Sunday Night (1.382 million metro and 2.069 million national viewers) and Downton Abbey (1.361 million metro and 1.964 million nationally), helped by Billy Connolly’s Route 66 (1.175 million metro viewers and 1.834 million nationally).
MasterChef had another good night for Ten with 1.396 million metro viewers and 1.857 million nationally from 7.30pm. But the rest of Ten’s line up was weak. Sporting Nation on ABC 1 ended with 659,000 metro viewers and 935,000 nationally. It deserved far more.
Tonight: Hours of news and current affairs on the ABC. Try Four Corners which looks at the pearling industry. Nine has a blind audition of The Voice (the US version). It’s been slipped in to replace the “rested” Tricky Business. Seven has Revenge and The Amazing Race from 7.30pm. Ten has MasterChef and SBS has the Tour de France (10pm), it’s the first time trial of the race (the second is the penultimate stage).
Last week: Seven won the metro markets Friday and Saturday nights with the AFL playing the major part, especially Friday night’s match between Carlton and Collingwood. Nine was second, the ABC third on Saturday night, while Ten was third on Friday night. Nine won the main channels and 7TWO won the digitals. Over the week Nine won with Seven second and Ten third. 7TWO won the digitals. The week’s most watched program was the announcement of the winner of The Block last Sunday night on Nine which averaged 4.159 million viewers. But the real winner was the third State of Origin game on Wednesday night which averaged 4.040 million viewers (a record) across 100 minutes or so of prime time TV.
Weekend sport: Ignoring the AFL and the NRL, how did other sports fare at the weekend? Last night, the men’ tennis final on Seven from Wimbledon averaged 306,000 metro viewers and 426,000 nationally. The Tour de France in SBS ONE had 264,000 metro viewers and 360,000 nationally. The British GP (won by Mark Webber) on Ten and ONE totalled 376,000 metro viewers and 507,000 nationally. The MotoGP from Germany on ONE had 238,000 metro viewers and 354,000 nationally. All solid figures for late night sport and TV generally.
On Saturday night/Sunday morning, the TDF on SBS ONE, 330,000 metro viewers and 451,000 nationally. The women’s final on Seven from Wimbledon averaged 193,000 metro viewers and 264,000 nationally. The One Day Cricket international between Australia and England on Gem averaged 123,000 viewers and 208,000 nationally. On Friday night the Tour de France averaged 242,000 and 340,000 nationally, while the Federer v Djokovic semi-final averaged 293,000 on Seven and 405,000 nationally.
In regional areas, WIN/NBN held off Prime7Qld to win the week, with SC Ten third. WIN/NBN won the main channels while 7TWO won the digitals thanks to the Wimbledon tennis.
