The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Nine ran very dead again last night, meaning Seven and Ten had the field to themselves. But that couldn’t revive ratings for Seven’s Australia’s Got Talent, its 918,000 metro audience and 1.399 million nationally for the second last episode isn’t good enough. It should have really done better. It is the second Wednesday in a row that the program failed to gain from the absence of a strongly-rating programming on Nine. Mrs Brown’s Boys, straight after at 9pm, added nearly 200,000 metro viewers, which tells us how much Australia’s Got Talent is on the nose with viewers.

MasterChef topped the night in metro markets for Ten with more than 1.3 million viewers and 1.765 million nationally. But the risotto contest and then the team cooking contest at the Barilla pasta factory showed up why MasterChef has lost its sheen. The risotto contest taught the audience zilch about cooking this simple but bloody hard dish. Regional areas got MasterChef right — it didn’t make the top five, finishing 6th, 150,000 viewers lower than Seven or Nine News. That was why it didn’t finish on top nationally.

The Tour de France had 348,000 metro viewers from 10pm (and 464,000 nationally) on SBS ONE, which meant it beat Nine’s Tricky Business with 311,000.

Tonight: No The Voice auditions on Nine tonight but there are three repeats of The Big Bang Theory wrapped around a fresh episode of  Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year and then the AFL and NRL Footy Shows. Ten has MasterChef as well as its footy shows. Seven has the usual Thursday night split and then Grey’s Anatomy. ABC 1 has Silk at 8.30pm. SBS has the Tour de France from 10pm. There’s a Lewis repeat on 7TWO at 8.30pm or thereabouts.
