Who are cinema’s most positive male role models? How would you define them, and what values do they represent?
This episode of The Parallax Podcast launches a new semi-regular series featuring special guests — notable Australians discussing a film-related theme of their choice.
Hosts Luke Buckmaster and Rich Haridy are joined by veteran comedian and broadcaster Lawrence Mooney, whose new ABC2 show Kane & Disabled premieres this week.
Mooney selected the subject of positive male role models in cinema. With characteristic aplomb, he chose four films involving grifters, convicts, crazies and card-sharks as talking points: Sidney Lumet’s Network (1976), Franklin J. Schaffner’s Papillon (1973), Roman Polanski’s Chinatown (1974) and George Roy Hill’s The Sting (1973).
What positive role models are represented in these four classic titles? How have they inspired him?
