Seven’s night thanks to Dancing With The Stars, with 1.771 million national/ 1.165 million metro/ 606,000 regional viewers.  Ten pushed past ABC1 into third as forecast in metro, regional and national markets, with NCIS getting the highest audience of 2013 with 1.273 million national/ 870,000 metro/ 403,000 regional viewers as a leading character ended her visit to HQ.
Seven news and Today Tonight won nationally, but Nine News and A Current Affair were again winners in Brisbane, as well as the key markets of Sydney and Melbourne. Incidentally, though Ten did well in metro and regional markets, the ABC still beat it in its home market of Sydney. Ten remains really on the nose in the country’s most important TV market and that will have to change before Ten can be said to be “coming back”.

Seven’s Home and Away averaged 1.528 million national/ 926,000 metro/ 598,000 regional viewers and made sure Seven dominated the night from 6pm until after 9.30pm. Nine’s Big Brother with 1.275 million national/ 916,000 metro viewers/ 359,000 viewer sucked up plenty of viewers in the 16-to-39s, 18-to-49s and the 25-to-54s demos. Dancing With The Stars topped women viewers aged 35-plus, which tells us that the bulk of Big Brother’s audience was a bit younger than that.

Watch for Seven to start pitching the  40-to-64 demographic from 2014 onward. It showed figures at last week’s launch that this group outspends any other age group by the ratio to 2.5 to one (citing Australian Bureau of Statistics data). It is where grocery buyers, travellers, older aspirationals and high ABs sit, and where female viewers are increasingly influential. This group spends more on cars, travel, a fair bit on mortgages, has a big appetite for retirement products and post-retirement products. Even though other networks and many of the big mouths among the agencies and media buyers will be naysayers, you can see from magazines and TV programming that Seven is on to something.
