Ten yanks A League of Their Own from the schedule at the last minute, flicks in repeats of Modern Family from 7.30pm (probably repeats of repeats of repeats) and the audience grows, with Homeland popping back over 400,000 metro viewers and over 570,000 nationally. It’s not rocket science, this TV programming stuff. There are some simple things to remember, such as not giving viewers rubbish like A League Of Their Own, and if you do, don’t leave it there to antagonise those viewers still loyal to the network, as Ten did for weeks.

Apart from that, a typical late ratings night in metro markets. Seven edged out Nine in metro All People, Nine beat Seven in the key demos. Ten was fourth, the ABC was third. In the regions, Seven was again a convincing winner, with the ABC a solid third and Ten a weak fourth. There was a certain lassitude among viewers last night who know the end of the 2013 is almost upon them. The evenings are longer, the nights warmer, better things await such as travelling overseas, reading books, drinking and eating, speech days and nights and then holidays, beach, sailing or sport. The summer of sport starts early with the first Ashes test this Thursday, then there’s the Christmas feast and the Boxing Day and New Years tests, broken by a raging hangover (aka New Years Eve). Then out of the blue, it’s the Australian Open Tennis on Seven.

Sound the ratings tocsin. Wake up Ten, Wake Up’s slow slide continues — 39,000 national/ 27,000 metro/12,000 regional viewers yesterday. Studio 10 is no better, with 44,000 national/ 31,000 metro/ 13,000 regional viewers — both down 1000 metro viewers from the previous Monday and almost 50% down on their debut morning figures. Although not unexpected, it was probably the most important bit of ratings news from yesterday and last night. Ten’s twin morning programs are on the edge of the apocryphal cliff. How long they remain there is up to the network’s management and viewers who seem distinctly uninterested in both offerings.
