Normal service restored last night after the madness of Sunday night. Seven won it easily, as Nine’s schedule was disrupted by the decision to air Schapelle a night earlier. They didn’t have anything ready to replace it, so they sacrificed the night with an OK news special and a repeat of the telemovie.
My Kitchen Rules led the way, helped again by Revenge (two episodes, but it definitely needs the strength of My Kitchen Rules in front of it as the leadin). My Kitchen Rules had 2.816 million national viewers/ 1.948 million metro/ 866,000 regional viewers.
ABC1 saw Sarah Ferguson make a so-so debut as Leigh Sales’ replacement on 730. Ferguson needs a few weeks to settle in. The interview with Bill Shorten suffered from first night nerves on her part and was too crisp, almost rude at times as she cut him off. The Four Corners co-production with The Australian saw the audience slide from last week’s 2014 start episode about the Australian trucking industry. Q&A saw more of the usual from the pollies and the rest of the panel, including Janet Albrechtsen from The Australian. For viewers it’s a zero sum program at times.
The Block (1.559 million national/ 1.068 million metro/ 491,000 regional viewers) had to carry the night after the news on Nine and though it was OK, there was the post-reveal judging night let down. But there was a glimmer of hope in the five metro markets — Nine News did better than Seven News, especially in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, while ACA won the 7pm slot in Sydney and Melbourne. But nationally, Seven News had more viewers than Nine News (it wasn’t a big margin), 1.784 million to 1.739 million. Nine’s repeat. Ten did OK overall, boosted by a solid Games showing from its digital channel, ONE. But its main channel had a miserable night out, beaten again by ABC1 as the audience fell away for So You Think You can Dance Australia (just 480,000 nationally) — it’s another dance turkey from Ten.
