A close night as Nine’s Love Child was adopted by Australian viewers last night, adding to another solid performance by The Block. Without My Kitchen Rules and another very strong outing last night, Seven would have been well and truly beaten as Revenge sank sharply after My Kitchen Rules. Seven News was weak in metro markets from 6-7 pm behind Nine News, and A Current Affair had more viewers at 7pm than Home and Away. On the numbers Seven was narrowly in front in metro markets from Nine (it was in fact a near dead heat). Seven was a slightly bigger winner in regional markets. Ten’s main channel was beaten in metro and regional markets by ABC 1 — the Australian viewing public isn’t really interested in the Games (there was still solid viewing on ONE).

Love Child had 1.963 million national/ 1.354 million metro/ 609,000 regional viewers. The Block had 1.730 million national/1.194 million metro/ 536,000 regional viewers. My Kitchen Rules jumped to 2.824 million metro/1.925 million metro/ 899,000 regional viewers. The jump in My Kitchen Rules viewers just kept Seven in front in metro markets. Without it, Nine probably would have scored a morale boosting win in All People. As it was Love Child repaid the heavy promotion (and the Packed To The Rafters boost from Jessica Marais). It was a very solid start, let’s see how it goes in the next couple of weeks as Nine’s Australian dramas have had an unfortunate habit of dying early. Let’s hope this is an exception.

Nine News had solid wins over Seven News in Sydney, Melbourne and a smaller victory in Brisbane. Seven’s 6 pm weakness in Sydney and Melbourne hasn’t gone away so far in 2014
