Seven’s night, more easily than the previous nights this week. Ten was again relegated to fourth spot in metro and regional markets. Nine was let down by the slump in the audience for the second episode of Inside Story — it lost 30% (or 300,000 viewers) in its metro audience.  It had 1.054 million viewers (and 700,000 metro) against more than 1.4 million national viewers for the debut and 1.003 million metro. More Masterchef on My Kitchen Rules on Seven last night. MKR had 2.410 million national/ 1.609 million metro/ 801,000 regional viewers). That was its lowest metro audience so far this season. A message there.

Another very weak night for Ten, despite the return of Puberty Blues to the line up. For whatever reasons Ten held this series over from last year. There has been a lot of rose-tinted chat about how wonderful this program is  –the reality was that it was sunk by The Biggest Loser as the lead-in (484,000 national/325,000 metro/ 159,000 regional viewers) and viewer boredom with the program. Puberty Blues had 746,000 national/ 538,000 metro/ 208,000 regional viewers. There was a jump in the audience, but it was nowhere near enough to cover the costs. In fact the Puberty Blues audience started series two half the size of the debut audience for series one (just over a million) two years ago.

But it was another good night for Shaun Micallef on Mad as Hell on ABC1 at 8pm (865,000 national/596,000 metro/ 269,000 regional viewers). Like The Checkout tonight on ABC1, Mad As Hell is a program only the ABC can do because commercial networks (including Foxtel), won’t do them for a combination of political and business reasons. Both programs have the power to upset political or commercial sponsors of commercial media. In the morning, Katy Perry boosted Sunrise’s audience which averaged 355,000 metro viewers — but Today shed viewers to fall back under 300,000 to 273,000 metro watchers. The first session of the final day of the third cricket test had 368,000 viewers for the regular session and 283,000 for the extras half hour. Very solid.
