Nine’s night last night in metro in regional markets in the main channels was far more important than Seven’s win overall in metro and regional markets. Nine also won the major demographics. In fact it was probably the best Monday night Nine has had for some time given the strength of the opposition on Seven with its blockbuster My Kitchen Rules. But it must be said Nine did well because of very strong performances in the Sydney and Melbourne markets, while Seven had solid wins in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
The Block had a strong night — its best weeknight so far with 2.113 million national/ 1.455 million metro/ 658,000 regional viewers. My Kitchen Rules had 2.461 million national/ 1.648 million metro/ 813,000 regional viewers. Love Child after The Block was the big difference for Nine. It averaged million 1.725 million national/ 1.139 million metro/ 586,000 regional viewers. Seven’s main support, Revenge, was weaker with 1.360 million million national/ 921,000 metro/ 439,000 regional viewers. And that was about the difference between the two on the main channels, aided by Nine’s better performance from 6pm to 7pm.
Ten was again weak its main channel share in metro markets was just 7.7% — better than Sunday night’s weak effort. It was a weaker 6.2% in regional markets. Of course the ABC was a strong third. Even after the Australian Story episode on Adam Boland, the former Seven and Ten morning TV executive which had 1.148 million national/755,000 metro/ 393,000 regional viewers. It was a long way from the program’s best efforts.
I started watching Q&A last night, but turned off when the first question was on Julia Gillard. Sheesh! That’s so 2013. Managed to catch the bit towards the end where of all people, Eddie Maguire and Lindsay Fox talked a bit of sense on refugees (especially Eddie). But my big highlight last night (apart from talking to the TV during Australian Story’s effort on Adam Boland at 8pm) was to watch RockWiz’s special on the music of Vanda and Young (Easybeats, Angels, Choirboys, John Paul Young and more) at 9.30pm on SBS ONE. I know it was St Kilda concert from last November’s series, but it was wonderful. And to have cancer survivor Doc Neeson from The Angels appear to sing the immortal Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again and listen to the audience yell out the equally immortal reply (if you don’t know it, you are the wrong age — young people ask your parents). And then Mark Gamble from the Choirboys to belt out Run To Paradise… heaven. Thanks Ms Zemiro, Monday nights are now more interesting.
