My Kitchen Rules won but the grand final produced a contradictory outcome in this morning’s ratings — an all-time high audience for the competition part, but a near 800,000 fall in the size of the national audience for the winner’s announcement. Seven won the night in metro and regional markets, Nine was second, the ABC third and Ten fourth. Seven backs up again tonight with the start of the second season of House Rules. Will the success of Nine’s first series of The Block for this year ruin it for House Rules?
My Kitchen Rules Winners‘announcement had 3.726 million national/ 2.595 million metro / 1.131 million regional viewers, which was a pretty impressive number. But it was 788,000 lower than the previous year’s fantastic 4.514 million national/ 3.133 million metro / 1.381 million regional viewers. That fall-off was a puzzle because the cook-off competition up to that point actually had more viewers than a year ago. My Kitchen Rules Grand Final cook-off had 3.329 million national / 2.302 million metro / 1.027 million regional viewers, which was more than 100,000 above 2013’s 3.131 million national/ 2.165 million metro / 970,000 regional viewers. So did the finalists not really interest viewers? That can’t be the case given the record audience for the preparation of the five course final meal. Perhaps viewers have started not caring about the outcome as much as they did last year. Could this be the peak for Seven’s ratings powerhouse?
And Vale Ian “Roscoe” Ross, the Nine and Seven network newsreader who died last night aged 73. He was the best reader I have seen in TV after Brian Henderson, and really came of age as a classy news host when he started at Seven just over a decade ago.
