Well, after the events of yesterday and last night in Sydney, no commentary. It all seems a bit superfluous, really. So no program rankings or figures, just network shares. The broadcasting of the siege made it hard to work out accurate figures from this morning.

The Sydney siege boosted the viewer numbers on News 24 in metros (3.1% share and regionals.2.9%) Sky News programs during the day and evening were also well watched. But the real impact (aided by the summer programming) was in the digitals — boosted by the more than doubling of News 24’s usual Monday evening audience. The combined share of the digital channels in the metros was 32.7%, and much higher in the regionals at 36.7%. Seven topped the Total People share in metro and regional markets. Sky News naturally topped the Pay TV channels rankings last night with a share of 5.9%.

And a brickbat this morning to the ABC radio reporter on 702 in Sydney who said that the dead barrister from the siege, Katrina Dawson of 8th floor Selbourne Chambers was from a “well known law firm”. Any reporter/host/producer worth their salt knows that in NSW at least, barristers are not organised into firms (and can’t be employed or a partner in a law firm).) They have chambers on floors in buildings in the CBD, of which Selbourne is one of the better known in Sydney. It is only a small point, but indicative of how far journalistic knowledge has dropped, even among experienced journalists like the host on 702 at the time, Sarah Macdonald.
