Another big night, and what a finish to the Big Bash cricket on Ten from chilly Canberra — a win off the very last ball for Perth’s Scorchers (who looked as though they were suffering from permafrost at times), with Brett lee denied the most romantic of endings to his great career, a title for his Sydney Sixers off his very last ball in competitive cricket. But it wasn’t to be.
The Bash was enough to push Ten to a win in total people, and a close second in the main channels. Ten screened the Big Bash Final live into Perth from 4.30pm to 8pm on its ONE digital channel, and not the repeat from 8.30pm on Ten’s main channel (which was hardly watched). With that understood and including the figures on the ONE broadcast in Perth, the post game audience topped the night with more than 1.6 million viewers, the Sixers batting (session two) averaged 1.58 million and the Scorchers’ innings was watched by just under 1.4 million.
So it’s free fanta for the three or four people left manning the listing ship that’s Ten. It recalls the heady days of late last year when the Grand Final of The Bachelor pushed Ten to the top of the ratings pile, for a night. And I bet there won’t be any post Final stories on The Project about jilted batters, spurned bowlers or sobbing wicketkeepers. The post final he saids, she saids and faux love of the finalists on The Bachelor ended our tolerance of those antics last year. Tonight it’s back to earth for Ten.
In the Open tennis on Seven, Novak Djokovic (Novak, according to Bruce, on Seven) whacked Milos Raonic in three sets and now plans to beat Stan (thanks, Bruce) tomorrow night (that’s the defending champion, Stan Wawrinka, Switzerland’s Number two player). And last night we had a Swiss blast from the past when the Swiss Miss, Martina Hingis popped up playing mixed doubles, years after she won her last singles title. She and her partner, Leander Paes of India won their quarter final and are now in the semis. Golden Oldies!
And The Block? Still rather confusing, I hope they all get busy. But it did well enough to cheer Nine. The Block did 1.453 million viewers across the country last night … the battle with My Kitchen Rules next week awaits.
