No My Kitchen Rules on Seven last night and The Block and I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here had nice pops in audiences. Nine boasted how The Block did well — which it did — without My Kitchen Rules on Seven.  Despite the absence of My Kitchen Rules,  I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here couldn’t bust the million viewer mark nationally — the ABC had more viewers overall and in the main channels in metro and regional markets. Ten had some nice demos, which are important for its sales campaign to advertisers, but the fact remains that the resource poor-ABC managed to beat the third ranked commercial network (which is also financially weak, but still has more money to spend than the ABC).  I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’s national audience rose to 955,000 last night as a result of My Kitchen Rules’ night off, from 845,000 the night before. The Block’s national audience rose to 1.220 million from 1.015 million.

Seven repeats My Kitchen Rules highlights tonight (there’s no AFL, so a hole has to be filled). Ten still had a To Be Advised for its 7.30pm slot. What’s the secret, or have they run out of ideas, or will some of  I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here linked program be dropped in at the last minute? What will be the use of that if the decision is taken so late it can’t be really promoted? Seven won all people, Nine won the main channels.

On Sky News, 52,000 people watched Tony Abbott interviewed by Paul Murray (that and the continuing political coverage helped boost Sky News to a fifth spot nationally among pay TV channels), and then this morning Christopher Pyne goes on Today and ruins the eight or nine hours of calm since the Murray interview by qualifying his belief about Tony Abbott continuing to be PM. The bloodsport that is the Liberal Party leadership continues to boost the audiences for ABC programs alone — News Breakfast had another solid morning yesterday while Sunrise and Today were both a bit under trend. Last night 7.30 had more viewers than A Current Affair on Nine, as did ABC News. In fact nationally ABC News finished third, beating The Block as well as I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

So far the battle for the leadership is in Today, Sunrise, News 24, Sky News, ABC News and 7.30, as well as News Breakfast and News 24 which had had solid audience shares all week, but the ABC programs are getting the only discernible benefit in terms of higher audience numbers. Commercial and ABC radio is getting a look in, but ACA and the Nine and Seven News broadcasts have been left behind, or so it seems at the end of this week. Of course, Twitter is also clambering into the story, via tweets good, bad and just plain wrong or mischievous. Next Monday and Tuesday loom as mad days for all media.
