Seven again rested the monster (My Kitchen Rules) and Nine, Ten and the ABC made hay, or rather their underfire programs tried to. So The Block did OK, but should have really done better with clear air! Ten’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Shank Blank (sorry, Shark Tank) did OK, as they all did the previous Sunday when My Kitchen Rules was rested. Despite that, Nine was a narrow winner in the metro main channels (but Seven had more people overall). In the regionals, Seven was a clear winner and Nine and Ten should have really done much better without My Kitchen Rules in Seven’s line up. It returns tonight.

The Block managed 1.479 million national viewers, the eviction part of Ten’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here averaged 1.025 million and the rest of the program, 894,000, or 960,000 across the entire program, which would keep Ten happy, as would have the 1.039 million for Shark Tank. Seven keep in the hunt with second tier programs, Australia: The Story of Us (1.254 million national viewers), My France With Manu (1.192 million), Downton Abbey with 1.168 million and a rare night topping national figure for Seven News of 1.516 million people. The ABC’s doco series Life On The Reef averaged 1.137 million viewers.

Nine’s 60 Minutes started the year with a bang with its version of the Martin Place Siege story. Since then it has fallen in a rather large hole and last night’s 686,000 metro viewers (and 1.041 million national viewers) was barely enough for a program of this importance for Nine. The start time of 8.10pm was not very helpful either.  Over 430,000 people vanished from Nine once The Block finished and 60 Minutes started. That turn off is another warning signal for Nine. The Gallipoli-heavy content clearly went down like a bomb with a jaded audience already well and truly over Nine’s mini series, Gallipoli. (Even thought there was a nice story last night about an Australian doctor who served Turkey in 1977 and then Australia at Gallipoli in 1915). Time to move on, Nine.

ABC’s Insiders had another good morning — 575,000 national viewers on ABC (357,000) and 218,000 on News 24. The Bolt Report on Ten had 218,000 for the 10am broadcast. In the afternoon it was pre-empted by the car racing on ten’s main channel and the repeat aired on ONE with 50,000. Bolt’s afternoon repeat now seems to be airing at 3pm on the main channel (where it can) instead of 4pm as a lead in to the news. That will cut the audience for the repeat. Watching Andrew Bolt and Janet Albrechtsen talking to each other yesterday was penance. They talk with such certainty and talk to each other and ignore the audience.
