Nine had a good old gloat this morning about its win last night thanks to The Block (how many treats, sorry threats?), the 6pm news and 60 Minutes. But what Nine didn’t say (naturally), that it was allowed to win by the generosity of Seven which isn’t running The Beast (AKA My Kitchen Rules) on Sunday nights any more. The final figure for the room reveal of 1.664 million was the second most watched program on the night, behind Seven News on 1.688 million.

That was a solid win by The Block, but it wasn’t as overwhelming as the wins by My Kitchen Rules. In fact it fell quite short of the sort of winning margins set up by My Kitchen Rules most nights. The Block had clear air last night compared to a couple of weeks ago (on week nights) when My Kitchen Rules and Ten’s I’m A Celebrity were in the hunt. Does that tell us viewers are just as jaded  (or confused) as I am about just what is going on in this series of The Block? It used to be an easy to follow series, but this one lost me weeks ago, and I suspect, has lost quite a few other viewers as well.

And Nine’s was only a metro win. Seven easily won the regional markets. In fact it was a dominant win for Seven in the regionals even without My Kitchen Rules. In the metros the ABC was fourth in total people, behind Ten, but in the main channels it was ABC third and Ten a weak fourth with 9.9%. In the regionals, the ABC was third by miles. Ten’s main channel share fell to just 7.7%. A bit better than a year ago, but not by much.

In the morning, Insiders again dominated The Bolter’s murmurings on Ten in the morning. In the afternoon the shift of the repeat of The Bolt Report program to 3pm from 4.30 pm has halved the audience. And if you are interested, there’s a mill up for grabs on Million Dollar Minute on Seven this evening at 5.30. It will boost the audience figures for Seven’s 6pm news, as it has did for the last three nights of last week.

Friday night’s World Cup cricket quarter final’s second session (the Australian innings) between Australia and Pakistan was watched by 1.819 million metro and regional viewers on Nine and Gem (in Sydney, Brisbane and regional areas of both NRL states). A further 244,000 watched on Fox Sports, making a total TV audience 2.063 million people. Those silly people who watched the NRL games missed a great Australian innings and some wonderful fast bowling. What I saw of the NRL game between Manly and Canterbury on Friday night resembled auditions for the Revenge of the Dinosaurs.
