Seven’s night easily in metro and regional markets as the combination of the news (2.154 million national viewers), the first episode of Catching Milat (2.174 million) and the house reveal episode of House Rules (1.881 million) did the job. Masterchef Australia on Ten (1.348 million) and Nine’s Reno Rumble (1.150 million) were left in Seven’s wake. The house reveal episode of House Rules clearly trumped the other two contenders. Tonight Reno Rumble is due to have a reveal — will it win big as it did last week?

But there was something else at work last night again in regional markets. Even though House Rules had a reveal episode, it completely dominated Masterchef Australia and Reno Rumble, as it has been doing for much of the past 10 days). House Rules had 727,000 regional viewers (second behind the 787,000 for the first episode of the Milat telemovie), Masterchef Australia was less than half that with 305,000 regional viewers, as was Reno Rumble with 307,000. Masterchef Australia and Ten were surprisingly weak in Adelaide last night and finished fourth with the ABC in third spot overall and in the main channels. But Ten was up on last year, although Seven had a bigger gain. Ten was also weak in regional areas and finished fourth behind the ABC overall and in the main channels. Southern Cross, its regional affiliate, will not be happy. Ten tends to ignore its stuttering regional performance when comparing its performance this year with last year. Ten is doing better, but its regional performance is lagging.

The A-League Grand Final won easily by Melbourne City had a total audience of 665,000 viewers, 414,000 on SBS on delay and 251,000 On Fox Sports live where it was the most watched game on pay TV yesterday and last night. I think having it live on SBS would have seen a bigger audience. But the combined audience on SBS and Fox Sports was larger than the 585,000 who watched Nine’s NRL game nationally. But Seven’s various AFL games yesterday afternoon won the battle of the eyeballs with 811,000 national viewers across Seven and 7mate.
