Ten’s night really in metro markets, even though the figures for Total People give Nine a small win. The real story was the second best night for Ten this year in the metros (The best night was the finale of I’m A Celebrity …) with a main channel win and in its way for a Thursday night, a dominant win. Masterchef and the Masterclass won the night for Ten, especially in the key demos. Nine’s Footy Show faded and faded badly in Sydney (126,000) and Brisbane (89,000) with the NRL version doing a preview of the first State of Origin game next Wednesday and not really boosting viewing levels. The AFL version’s audience was just 203,000 in Melbourne, which is not very good.
Seven was especially weak and the poor showing was led by the 6pm news in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane which were beaten by Nine easily — 59,000 in Sydney, a massive 167,000 in Melbourne and an uncomfortable 75,000 in Brisbane.
But in the regionals it was a completely different night with Seven a big winner from Nine and Ten way back in third. Going into the weekend, Seven is a narrow leader overnight in the metros but in the regionals it leads easily. The divergence between metro and regional viewers has been more noticeable with the arrival of this season of Masterchef Australia. For whatever reason it can’t seem to grab and hold regional viewers like the current series is now doing in the metros. Last night’s episode averaged a solid 363,000 regional viewers, but the dashcam episode of Surveillance OZ had 477,000 and Home and Away had 491,000. The Masterclass episode of Masterchef Australia saw the audience lose 100,000 to 265,000, and yet that was the more interesting of the two programs.
