A close night in the metros. Seven finished just in front of Nine and Ten in Total People and the main channels, but Masterchef Australia’s performance gave Ten a whack of the best demo viewers. But in the regionals, it was a very easy win for Seven. In fact so easy was it that daylight was second — a result that was in stark contrast to the closeness in the metros. Seven again lost the 6pm news battle badly in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. But Sunrise had a big win in the mornings as it added viewers and Today shed them. Sunrise’s caravan shtick for the week worked.

With an AFL game on Seven tonight, Nine ran the AFL Footy Show last night, resulting in split programming and a weak performance, especially in the regionals. Masterchef Australia topped the night in both the metros and nationally with more than 1.5 million people, with a solid 420,000 of them in the regionals. ABC’s The Weekly battled on gamely with 925,000 national viewers, which wasn’t too shabby.
