The Voice did it for Nine, but only in metros and really only in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane which were won by Nine. Seven won Adelaide and Perth. In the regionals Seven was an easy winner as The Voice failed to strike the right note with viewers. Ten’s recent solid performance came to a halt and it battled with the ABC for third and fourth spot in both metros and regionals. Nine won the main channels far more easily in the metros, but lost the battle to Seven in the regionals which won with the same ease.
The Voice had 2.091 million national viewers, but only 534,000 of those were in regional markets. Seven’s House Rules was boosted to 1.812 million national viewers (from just over a million in the metros and over half a million behind The Voice) by 793,000 regional viewers — easily the most watched program last night in regional markets. The Voice will do well, but we can already see it’s really an east coast show, with limited appeal in Adelaide and Perth, and weak appeal in the regionals, much like Reno Rumble. Masterchef Australia was squeezed last night and its audience tumbled to just on 1.2 million national viewers, which included a weak 316,000 in the regions.
60 Minutes’ Tara Brown did a very good interview with Belle Gibson, the discredited blogger and “expert”. Brown was restrained, Gibson was still unknowing. Sunday Night had a wonderful story on the bravest boy in Australia — a very, very painful and agonising face reconstruction that was well told, without being mawkish. Belle Gibson would not have understood a thing about the bravery of the little boy, if she had bothered to watch the Sunday Night story.
In the morning Insiders had 550,000 national viewers at 9am on ABC and the interview with Malcolm Turnbull, who lost it by confecting anger at the line of questioning from host Barrie Cassidy about Zaky Mallah and whether he was a threat walking around shopping centres (if, as Turnbull had claimed, and the government, that there was a security risk in allowing Mallah into the Q&A audience last Monday night). When interviewees, especially pollies, resort to confected anger, you know they are desperate and treading water. Barrie Cassidy held his nerve and continued in an act of professionalism which showed up the Communications Minister.
