Nine wins, Seven weak. It was the same message in the metros as in the regionals. End of night. The Voice topped the night with 2.292 million national viewers including a very tasty 621,000 in the regions. Lip Synch Battle had 1.509 million viewers and Nine News had more than 1.7 million. ACA did well in the metros and managed more than 1.3 million viewers nationally. Seven struggled — House Rules had less than a million viewers in metro markets and struggled to 1.441 million nationally, with 575,000 in the regionals. Based on its earlier performances in the regions, it should have done a lot better, especially as it was the third last episode of the series. Tonight’s penultimate episode has to rate better than last night.

The second part of Gina Rinehart’s story on Australian Story averaged more than 1.2 million national viewers. She came across as someone who doesn’t understand inheritance and how she became rich because of what she got from her father, and whipped into shape, and how it’s now the turn of her heirs to have a go. The Packers, the Pratts and the Lowys all understand that to varying degrees. Ms Rinehart doesn’t.

Q&A managed 900,000 viewers without a Liberal Party front or backbencher in sight and the discussion was better for it (Amanda Risworth, the Labour MHR was a bit like a shag on a very lonely political rock). 7.30 with Malcolm Turnbull’s freebie interview averaged 1.112 million national viewers, including a weak 735,000 in the regions. The 7pm episode of The Project did slightly better in the metros than 7.30 with 737,000 viewers. That’s been happening more and more in recent weeks, although they don’t go head to head, the closing gap has become quite noticeable. Time for 7.30 to lift its game? Seven’s The Blacklist also did poorly with 894,000 for the first episode and 713,000 for the second. The first episode had a weak 559,000 in the metros. Few offshore programs seem to have any ratings staying power these days, especially those from the US, and especially in drama. Seven returns Winners & Losers to its schedule after House Rules tonight. Worth returning to.
