An easy win in the metros for Nine thanks to the unlikely combination of The Voice on Nine’s main channel and the second Ashes test on the Gem digital channel. In fact, the game saw normal service restored in test cricket with Australia ruling the roost after the Cardiff stumble. Nine also won regional markets, overall and in the main channels, but Ten was pushed down to fourth by the ABC as Masterchef Australia again failed to have the same level of support that it is getting in the metros.

Seven returned Dancing With The Stars (1.212 million national viewers), a bit snappier in look and a bit more zippy in pace, but it pales besides The Voice so far as the younger viewers are concerned. Dancing would have had more competition from the test cricket on Gem (1.160 million for session 1 from 8pm to 10pm) than from The Voice (2.138 million national viewers) on Nine’s main channel. Masterchef Australia on Ten managed 1.406 million national viewers at the start of its final week, which wasn’t bad and better than Dancing With The Stars.

Seven is very lucky that the test was wrapped up inside four days early today. Just imagine how the grand final of House Rules would have been whacked tonight from a combination of The Voice and the fifth day of the test. Now the final of House Rules will be whacked by The Voice and Lip Synch Battle.

Losers: Everyone was well served by what was on offer. Great drama in the final episode of George Gently, the restoring of the natural order of things in the Test cricket, the confected competition on The Voice and Lip Synch (I see Delta Goodrem turned up on The Voice. So much for her hissy fits), a bit of chefing magic on Masterchef Australia and the Tour De France on SBS.Metro news and current affairs:
