The Bathurst 1000 supercar race dominated viewing on free-to-air and cable TV yesterday. The FTA broadcast on Ten averaged 2.101 million for the presentation on Ten, while the race averaged nearly 1.8 million viewers. On Pay TV, the final stage and presentation averaged 244,000 on Fox Sports. The other big sporting event yesterday — the Rugby World Cup from pool game between Australia and Wales — averaged 159,000 on Nine’s Gem in the very early hours (so why not Nine’s main channel?) and 143,000 on Fox Sports 2.

Apart from that, it was an average night. The Block did well with season high figures (and no X Factor on Seven). Seven’s fast-tracked Quantico from the US managed 998,000 national viewers, including 696,000 in the metros — barely there. Limitless, a Ten movie had 741,000 viewers and the fat cutting show (TBL Families) managed a jump to 849,000 national viewers. But Seven slipped a new police show — Beach Cops — into the line up and it had a very sold start with more than 1.4 million national viewers and just over a million in the metros.

Vera ended on the ABC with 1.062 million and deservedly beat Quantico on Seven. It’s a chalk and cheese comparison, or rather, high quality UK crime drama against standard US crime bang bang, rogue agent mistake storyline which is all so very ho hum (Blacklist is the same line and both come from the same producer). Quantico is supposed to be a “sexy” thriller/drama and Blacklist is now injected that into the storyline. Give me old fashioned, cleavage-free UK style (Vera, DCI Banks) cops.

In the morning The Bolt Report was pre-empted by a certain car race, so Insiders had the field to itself.
