The X Factor finished fifth in the metros, which given that it was a live performance episode should really have done better, as it did in the regions where the audience of 559,000 not only topped the night, but pushed the program to top spot nationally with 1.576 million people. In fact the regional audience was more than half the metro audience, which is a very high proportion. Nine’s The Block also jumped from seventh in the metros to third nationally with 1.371 million and 372,000 regional viewers. Seven’s Home and Away was another success for Seven with 1.334 million national viewers including 523,000 in the regions which was 64% of the metro audience of 811,000.

Seven won overall in the metros, but Nine won the main channels (which would have been a source of frustration for Seven). Nine did well in the demos with The Block. In the regions, Seven was a bigger winner overall and the main channels.

In the mornings, Today with 331,000 viewers beat Sunrise with 310,000. Not the best start for what turned out to be a frustrating day in the metros. At 5.30pm The Chase Australia could only beat Hot Seat by a small margin — 586,0000 to 584,000, meaning Nine won the 6 to 7 pm news hour. Seven will be looking for a better performance tonight from the combination of The X Factor and 800 Words.
