The first seven programs in metro markets last night were news and current affairs broadcasts that ended by 8pm. Then the night was yours to do what you may and a shrinking group of viewers remained glued to their sets and others did a bit of slip sliding away.
Nationally the top four programs were news and current programs and all had a million or more viewers (Seven News was the only program in the metros with a million or more viewers). Summer is here with a vengeance and some of the national figures would be seen as more than OK for metro audiences: 7.30 for example had 933,000 national viewers, the 7pm ABC News had 1.097 million national viewers and Seven News/Today Tonight had 1.021 million which would be a top 10 finish in prime time in winter. The one off Weekly With Charlie Pickering managed 888,000 national and 592,000 metro viewers, which was solid. If anyone is interested, Nine won the metros, Seven won the regions and Santa is another sleep closer. SBS continues to stand out with its audience up sharply, continuing what has been its best year for some time, ad breaks and all. Fargo ended with 251,000 national viewers.
Tonight the Big Bash tip and run starts on Ten and at least we will have some competitive cricket — unlike what we saw in Hobart and will see in Melbourne and Sydney.
