Nine’s night in the metros. Even though Seven had more viewers in Total People, Nine’s easy win in the main channels was notable. In the regions, Nine won total people but Seven won the main channels — the reverse of the metro outcome. Ten was nowhere in an interesting fade, again, on a Sunday night. Will it be repeated tonight? Viewing levels were down a touch. Father’s Day perhaps?

But it is the demise of Ten’s Australian Survivor which is taking the eye: 723,000 nationally, 560,000 in the metros and just 163,000 in the regions. Just not enough, no matter what spin Ten puts on it. And for yet another Sunday night, Ten was fourth in the metros and the regions and nationally.

Seven’s The Big Music Quiz saw around 300,000 viewers drop out of last week’s promising debut. The national audience fell to a still solid 1.445 million from 1.762 million, but the metro audience fell sharply – down from 1.211 million to 930,000 last night. The Block averaged 1.522 million national viewers with 1.071 million of those in the metros. A solid performance.

In the regions, the most watched programs were: Seven News with 540,000; Big Music Quiz, 535,000; Nine News, 479,000; The Block, 452,000 and 60 Minutes was fifth with 408,000.

Tonight it’s the ABC’s usual news and current affairs line up. It’s also the Just Desserts shown on Seven, The Block on Nine and Australian Survivor on Ten (which will be the most aptly named program on TV by the end of this season). I can’t see it returning in 2017 without a sudden rediscovery by Ten viewers in the next couple of weeks.

US updates: The 2016-17 US ratings season kicks off this week with some old series returning, but the highlight is the start of the new NFL season Friday morning our time, and then next Sunday night and Monday morning, our time. So far 123 new series have been identified as starting on USTV: that’s free to air, cable, streaming video, satellite. October says 56 of those new series premiering ahead of the first sweeps month from the last week of October to the last week of November. A total of 17 series have been identified as starting their last season over the next three to four months. More are due to joint them, including many of the 123 newbies.

And Beyond Productions (owned here) has just sold a sort of spin off from the Mythbusters series (which ended on Discovery channel back in early March). Called  The White Rabbit Project and starring Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara (the three minor Mythbusters). Netflix has ordered the series which is due to start on December 9. The series storyline is the trio investigate weird and wonderful events from pop culture, science and history.  The White Rabbit reference is from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, not the Jefferson Airplane hit.
