This is a first. For somebody who has been sacked 16 times over five decades, it’s quite an unusual experience to be announcing a resignation. After two years of chronicling life as a Senate cross-bencher for Crikey, I have decided to part ways.
Let’s say we had some “style and content” issues. And I’m too old to change. I loved the forum and those columns formed the backbone of my Christmas book Hinch vs Canberra. In my letter to the editor, I resorted to an old song and said “let’s call the whole thing off”.
At least I wasn’t like Ernest Hemingway whose resignation letter to the Toronto Globe and Mail filled six feet of toilet paper or the wire service reporter who knew the need for telegram brevity (in cost-saving agency style) and said to UPI: “upstick job arsewards.”

I was quite disappointed to read that Senator Hinch would no longer be writing his Senate Diary for Crikey. I enjoyed his commentary and it was fascinating to read of the machinations that underpin the works and decisions in the Senate. It was especially refreshing to hear about this work from a non-major party point of view. All the best Senator and let’s hope it’s not the last we read of your efforts (and somehow I doubt it will be).
That’s a shame, it was a good read but rather light on content, I was forever hoping that Senator Hinch would say something interesting about the policies of the day, eg why he is supporting corporate tax cuts etc.
Oh no! I didn’t mind the style and content at all. I didn’t always agree with what he said or did, but it was always interesting reading. I hope he does a blog somewhere.
I’m sorry you’re going Derryn – I have enjoyed your contributions.
This is disappointing.
