Did the Australian government have a massive Java earthquake aid package ready to be launched – only to discover that it didn’t have the military personnel and logistical support needed to launch it? That’s what sources suggest to Crikey.

Still, we gather there’s a small silver lining to the matter. It’s given the Indonesians something to smile at.

Meanwhile, as the relief operation moves from search and rescue to refugee resettlement and healthcare, emergency food stocks are reportedly within days of running out if the hard-hit Indonesian city of Yogyakarta does not get outside help quickly.

According to reports, the death toll from the magnitude 6.2 quake surpassed 6,000 as of late yesterday. Most of the dead were found in Bantul Regency of Yogyakarta Special Region and the Central Java Province that surrounds Yogyakarta.

On top of those killed, as many as 30,000 people are injured and more than 130,000 are believed to have been displaced as a result of the quake.
