Glenn Dyer’s comments: The World Cup final averaged 882,000 on SBS yesterday morning. That’s more viewers than most AFL games on Seven and Ten this year attract (they are mostly national). It may have been a once every four years event, but it was also at a difficult time of day. Could the same sized audience being attracted by Australia playing England in Rugby Union (a world cup final, yes) or Rugby League at the same time? Nah. The AFL doesn’t play anybody internationally (except the made up game to get a tour of Ireland). So soccer and SBS the winners and Australia didn’t do too bad.
TONIGHT: Packed To The Rafters on Seven, Top Gear on Nine, the Tour de France (day two in the Alps, great scenery, incredible riding) on SBS, MasterChef and Modern Family on Ten, Sydney is the city in question on The Greatest Cities on the ABC.
The great unwatched program last week was Seven’s Australia Versus at 9.30pm. Tonight it’s back to 10.30pm, replaced by the returning Ghost Whisperer, which had gone to ratings heaven in the US.
